LASIK: am I a good candidate?

Before you decide to undergo LASIK or any other vision correction procedure, you need to know if you are a good candidate. Find a LASIK surgeon in your area, and talk with him or her about the procedure. This short quiz will help you be more informed when discussing laser vision correction.

The quiz will discuss some of the issues that help determine who is a good candidate for CustomCornea® and traditional LASIK treatment, as well as some other important factors to consider when making your decision. It does not include all the considerations that must be made, and does not substitute for a consultation with an eye care specialist.

1. Are you at least 21 years old?

2. Have you had a change in your glasses or contact lens prescription in the past year?

3. Have you had any of the following eye conditions: herpes, glaucoma (high blood pressure in the eye), keratoconus (cone-shaped protrusion of the cornea), or previous eye injuries or eye surgeries (cataracts, etc)?

4. Are you currently pregnant or nursing?

5. Can you physically tolerate the following: focusing on a blinking light and eye drops?

6. Do you have nearsightedness between 0 and -9.0 diopters with less than 3 diopters of astigmatism or have hyperopia (farsightedness) between 0 and +6.0 diopters with up to 6.0 diopters of astigmatism?

7. Are you a diabetic?

8. Do you have collagen vascular, autoimmune, or immunodeficiency disease (e.g., AIDS, lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, multiple sclerosis, or myasthenia gravis)?

9. Do you understand the laser vision correction surgical procedure, and its associated risks and benefits?

10. Do you have a job that does not permit you to have laser vision correction?

11. Are you willing to sign a consent agreement?

12. Are you aware that, depending on the vision correction needed, laser eye surgery may improve your vision, but not completely eliminate your need for eyeglasses or contacts?

13. Are you also aware that even if you don't have to wear corrective lenses following laser eye surgery, you may become dependent on reading eyeglasses as you age, due to presbyopia?
